Pakistan is a country with a rich heritage and culture which is located in the hub of the South Asian sub-continent. Pakistan is the sixth most populous country in the world and is the second most populous country with a Muslim majority. Pakistan is a rapidly developing country which has faced a number of challenges on both political and economic fronts. Pakistan has embarked on a nuclear weapon program to safeguard the South Asian balance of power as the first Muslim nation to have acquired such capability.
Pakistan has a developing mixed economy based largely on agriculture, light industries, and services. The government gives the
highest priority to economic and social development. Agriculture sector is responsible for 25% of it economy with cotton, rice, wheat, sugarcane and maize as the
major crops. Pakistan is an exporter of fruits, especially citrus, and fish and fish preparations. Industrial sector accounts for 24% of the economy. Textiles, chemicals,
pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, building materials, cement, fertilizers, sports goods, surgical goods, and leather goods are the mainstay of the industrial sector and the
country's exports. Energy, IT and small and medium sized industries are among the fastest growing sectors in the country. Although the Gross National Product is increasing
more rapidly than the population, the GNP per capita, estimated at US$ 430, is among the lowest for developing countries. Up to 50% of the workforce is employed in agriculture.
The industrial sector is growing, with manufacturing now generating half of the country's exports. Development of natural gas, oil and mineral deposits is also contributing to Pakistan's economic growth.
Pakistan is divided into four major provinces Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and North-West Frontier Province. Pakistan also governs part of Kashmir which is currently split
between Pakistan and India. The Indus region was the site of several ancient cultures including Mehrgarh, one of the world's earliest known towns, and the Indus Valley Civilization (2500 BCE - 1500 BCE) at Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro.
Pakistan is a destination of special interest for travelers and tourists. Nature has bestowed upon Pakistan the rare landscape, the towering mountains, plateau, plains, deserts and the attractive sunny beaches are also seen here. The scenery changes northward from coastal beaches, lagoons and mangrove swamps in the south to sandy deserts, desolate plateaus, fertile plains, dissected upland in the middle and high mountains with beautiful valleys, snow-covered peaks and eternal glaciers in the north.
Pakistan's main attractions include cultural and archaeological tourism as found in Taxila, Moenjodaro, Harrappa, and early Muslim and Mughal heritage at Multan, Lahore, Thatta, Peshawar and Swat. The adventure tourism in the northern areas is Hunza valley, Rakaposhi, Nanga Parbat, Khyber Pass, Karakoram, and K-2.
