| Value Addition in Poultry Products through Processing |

Bio-vet (Pvt.) Ltd. and Meyn Food Processing Technology B.V. arranged a seminar on “Value Addition in Poultry Products through Processing” in association with Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman Society (MKRS) on 5th September 2007 at Pearl Continental Hotel, Lahore.

Governor of the Punjab, Lt. Gen (R) Khalid Maqbool graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The seminar was held to introduce the contemporary Poultry processing technology in Pakistan. The seminar was attended by the representatives of international Poultry processing companies, major players of the Poultry industry and luminaries of the society.

Governor in his address said that private sector had played an important role in growth of the Poultry-sector at 9 percent per annum. He said the Poultry has seen the highest growth in the livestock sector, thus making a big contribution to the economy and providing quality meat to the people at lower rates. The importance of the Poultry Industry in a developing country cannot be ignored. The use of modern technology in Poultry processing has led to massive productivity improvement over the last few years. As such, Poultry has emerged as a key segment within the agro-industry sector. He assured government support for promotion of Poultry products and foreign investment in the Poultry processing industry.

Punjab Health Minister Ch Muhammad Iqbal, Tourism Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal, Chief Executive Bio-vet Anwar Dar, Dr. Mustafa Kamal from Big Bird, Chairman PPA Mir Tahir Zaidi and Ahmed Waqas, Director Bio-vet (Pvt.) Ltd also spoke on this occasion.

Chief Executive Bio-vet Anwar Dar in his speech said that Bio-vet had been keen to introduce latest technology of Poultry processing in Pakistan which will solve the problems faced by the Poultry industry. He urged the government to implement legislation on the sale and slaughter of the chicken meat at local Poultry shops.

Mr. Mustafa Kamal of Big Bird Group said that 170 hatcheries and 119 feed mills are operating in the country, where 980 million kilogram chicken meat is being produced annually. He said per capita consumption of chicken meat in Pakistan is seven kilogram, while 100,000 million eggs are produced in the country and over one million people have been employed in the Poultry Industry. He said in 2004-05, the chicken meat consumption, in the country comprised 37 per¬cent of total meat consumption against 25 percent of mutton and 38 percent of beef. The chicken meat consumption is, however fast rising, and by 2015 would be 50 percent of total consumed meat in the country.
